Have you ever gone on holiday and found your hair reacts completely differently compared to washing your hair at home? Did you know that the quality of the water can affect your curls, either causing your hair to feel dry and frizzy, or creating soft, limp curls with no hold. In this blog post, we'll take a look at the difference between hard water and soft water, and how you can help your curls.

How Water Quality Affects Your Curls

You’ve likely heard of soft water and hard water, but what does this actually mean? The difference is in the level of minerals like calcium and magnesium.

What is soft water?

Soft water has low levels of calcium and magnesium. Shampoos tend to foam up easier with soft water and it has less impact on our hair, since the water doesn’t leave any residue. However, for those with fine curls, soft water can lead to the curls being overly soft and limp, with little hold. Fine, soft hair needs a little grit and texture to hold the curls which is when hard water can be helpful.

What is hard water?

Hard water has higher levels of calcium and magnesium, and this can build up on the hair over time. Shampoos tend to not lather as well, and have to work harder to clean the hair. It’s good to do a clarifying wash about once a month to remove hard water build up. Hard water can cause the hair to feel dry and frizzy, as well as feeling like there’s residue on the hair. It can also dry out scalps, leaving them feeling itchy and flaky, which can be an issue for those with sensitive skin.

What You Can Do To Help Your Curls

How to care for your curls with soft water

If you live in an area with soft water and you find your curls fall flat quickly or feel too soft, try adding protein to your routine. Protein strengthens the curls and adds bounce, as well as adding texture so your curls hold better.

An easy way of adding protein to your curl routine is by using our Curl Mousse or Heat Protect Spray. These products are both rich in protein and work really well with our other styling products. Try adding some Mousse after the Hydrating Creme but before the Gel to create long-lasting bouncy curls. The Heat Protect Spray can be used at any point in your styling routine.

How to care for your curls with hard water

If your curls are struggling with hard water build up, there are a few things you can do to help. As our Curl Cleanser is very gentle and sulfate-free, it helps to wash your hair twice before applying Conditioner. This helps keep on top of build up.

It’s also a good idea to do a stronger clarifying wash about once a month. There are many clarifying shampoos available, but if you prefer a more natural solution, you can do an Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Rinse. This is great for clarifying, refreshing the scalp and restoring PH balance. You might need a bit more moisture in your hair to counteract the drying effects of hard water, so regular deep conditioning with our Deep Hydration Hair Mask is helpful.

How To Do an ACV Rinse:

  1. Gently brush out your curls.
  2. Mix 2 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar in a bowl of warm water.
  3. Dip your hair in the bowl and massage into your hair and scalp for a couple of minutes, then rinse.
  4. Follow with our Curl Conditioner or the Deep Hydration Hair Mask to restore moisture.

Styling Tips for Long-lasting Curls

  • When styling your hair, try to use products sparingly, especially if your hair is easily weighed down.
  • Always apply the Hydrating Creme on soaking wet hair as this will help lock in moisture.
  • If your hair is more frizzy, try our stronger Mega Hold Gel to combat this, and apply our Shine & Define Serum on dry hair to seal your curls and smooth any remaining frizz.
